2025 Penney Nature Center Camp
Trails to Adventure
|
Penney Nature Center was a hub of activity and excitement as campers attended this year's kids camp. 109 campers attended multiple learning sessions about being prepared and safe when outdoors. Bill Grimes presented campers with how to enjoy hiking and what to bring as well as using a compass. The Defiance County Sheriff's Department talked with students about safety in any surrounding using situational awareness and knowing what to do in emergencies. Maumee Valley Guidance Center and Recovery Services contributed to this year's event by encouraging campers to use the outdoors to relieve stress and establish positive emotions by taking a walk and being mindful of the conditions and unique surprises around them. Allen County SWCD, Camp Palmer staff and OSU Water Quality got the campers up and moving with activities featuring wildlife, watersheds, and wetland creatures. Defiance SWCD, OSU Extension, and Defiance Solid Waste brought out creativity in the kids with flower pots, wind chimes, exploding soils, bottle rockets and more. The Oxbow Lake recreation day was once again a camp favorite as the third through fifth graders spent the day kayaking, fishing and learning archery led by Knocking Point Outfitters and the ODNR. Camp experiences each day were only made possible thanks to the terrific mentoring and leadership by the members of the Defiance County 4-H clubs who served as camp counselors.
